Pole Position Remix, Retro Game for iPhone and iPod Touch
September 30, 2008
Pole Position: Remixfor the iPhone and iPod touch is a classic arcade racer in which a player has to complete a lap in a certain amount of time in order to qualify for F1 race. After qualifying, the player has to face other cars in a championship race. The game offers three methods of control: accelerometer-based tilt, touch-based slider mechanism, and on-screen steering wheel mode. You can accelerate or brake your car with a small brake pedal.
Pole Position was the leading game in arcades worldwide due to its relatively realistic graphics for the time. It wasn’t the first game to use the “rear-view racer format,” but it did pioneer the format which is used in many games today.
The iPhone and iPod touch version of this classic game features upgraded graphics and several different control methods, but remains similar in content to the original. Players have three race options to choose from - a Single Race, Grand Prix, the unlockable Sudden Death mode, or practice a track. There are also five race tracks - Namco, Speedway, Wonder, Seaside, and Misaki Point.
Points are awarded for the distance you travel and for each enemy car you pass. Blow by the competition to unlock additional tracks, cars, billboards and graphical themes based on Namco hit games. Some of the cars you can unlock include Dig Dug, Pac-Man, Retro, Galaga, Tekken, and Neopolis. To successfully finish the race, you need to be very careful. The tilting control is extremely sensitive and if there are two or three vehicles ahead of you, you’ll have a hard time passing them without crashing. Price: $9.99 (download).
