Today, we hand picked five awesome health apps that are so cool, they might even save your life.
Steps app can calculate the number of steps, average speed, total distance, and total calories burned. This application uses the device motion sensors to calculate your body movements. It also calculates your stride from your height and the number of calories burned from your weight. To ensure the best accuracy, it is recommended to put your iPhone or iPod touch in your pockets or wear it at your waist. Price: $1.99 (download).
ICE app provides emergency personnel a quick, easy, and obvious way of finding out exactly who you would like to be contacted in the event you are unable to contact them yourself. ICE also contains other important information like allergies, medications, and medical conditions, including over 170 of the most commonly prescribed and over-the-counter medications. You can make your own custom entries and notes about each allergy, medication, or medical condition. Price: $0.99 (download).
Restaurant Nutrition app allows your to easily view nutritional information about restaurant menus and track what you have eaten. It can also synchronize your personal meal entries with the the Foundation HealthCare Network’s web site and download updated data as it is available. Each time a restaurant name appears in the program, the map button near it can be touched to open the Maps application showing all of that restaurant’s nearby locations. Multiple people can track what they eat in this application at the same time by utilizing the concept of profiles. The application can either be setup to connect to the internet, or run as a standalone application saving data entries only to the iPhone or iPod touch. Price: Free (download).
Epocrates Rx app enables healthcare professionals to find medical information more quickly and confidently at the point of care. Epocrates’ drug database provides monographs for 3,300 brand and generic drugs, including dosing, adverse reactions, interactions, pharmacology, and pricing, as well as images of the medication. Patients can also use this tool to check for potentially harmful drug to drug interactions. So called “mystery” pills can be identified by its appearance or imprint code with the Pill ID feature. MIM app provides multi-modality imaging display and fusion, including CT, PET, MRI, and SPECT. This application allows a referring physician or patient to view medical images remotely, without being tied to an imaging workstation. Additionally it can be used as a non-diagnostic viewer for users who have MIM Workstations. The images are prepared on the Workstation and downloaded onto the iPhone or iPod touch. In a future release, the scope will expand to allow patients access to their own data. Price: Free (download).
