Apple to Open Store in Paris Under the Louvre Glass Pyramid

June 6, 2008

The Louvre - Carrousel du LouvreApple is staking a claim to one of the world’s most prestigious retail real estate sites. According to French financial daily La Tribune, Apple has received approval to build one of its stores in Paris, France, under the glass pyramid in the Carrousel du Louvre - the shopping center in the Louvre Palace next to the famous museum and glass pyramid.

La Tribune’s brief report notes that Apple has drawn up plans to build a 715 square meter (2 346 square feet) store in space previously occupied by Resonances and Lalique stores, and among Virgin Megastore, Esprit, and Sephora.

“More people are going to be seeing the MacBook Air than the Mona Lisa,” said Michael Gartenberg, a vice president and research director for Jupiter Research.

The Louvre (Musée du Louvre), in Paris, France, is one of the world’s most visited art museums in the world with over 8 million people visiting in 2007. The collection contains nearly 35,000 pieces displayed over the structure’s 60,000 square metres (650,000 sq ft).

In a statement, Apple said it was “thrilled” to move into the Carrousel du Louvre. “We are looking forward to bringing the unique Apple retail experience to our customers in France.”

Apple has official stores in four countries outside the United States - Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy and Japan, with over 200 outlets worldwide.
