Apple Cuts Jobs in Elk Grove, but Remains Major Employer
May 3, 2008
The jobs of 174 workers at the Apple Inc facility in Elk Grove are being eliminated, with some of the work moved to an Apple office in Austin, Texas, the company says. Even with the cuts, Apple will employ about 1,100 workers in Elk Grove.
Kristin Huguet, a spokeswoman for the company, praised Apple for having more employees in Elk Grove than ever.
“Apple’s headcount continues to grow in Elk Grove with more than 1,100 employees working there today, up more than 50 percent in the past three years,” - she said. Huguet declined to disclose the salary range of the affected employees.
“While it’s very disappointing that 174 people are going to be laid off, we’re still fortunate that the company remains a major employer in Elk Grove,” said Steve Czarnecki, executive director of the Elk Grove Economic Development Corp.
In a letter to state officials, Cupertino-based Apple says the laid-off workers will be given opportunities to relocate or apply for another Apple job in Elk Grove. Relocated positions include online store representatives, chat representatives, tech customer service support workers and others.
The company has warehousing and distribution operations in Elk Grove, as well as a customer support call center. Apple employees have been told by the company not to speak to the media.
