April 12, 2008
Virtualization company Parallels Inc (formerly SWsoft) has now released the third beta of their Parallels Server for Mac, which uses Parallels’ Hypervisor technology to enable the hardware to run different operating systems and software.
The application is designed to enable users to run “virtualized” operating system and server environments. This is the latest edition of their server virtualization software for Intel powered Apple Macs.
The company is working with Apple to soon provide a virtualized Mac OS X server. No time frame was given for the availability of such functionality. Beta 3 of the software includes several enhancements, such as an integrated set of tools including Parallels Tools, Image Tools, and Transporter. In addition, to assist in development, an SDK and API will also be offered.
Parallels Server for Mac enables some neat functions, including the standardization of server hardware platforms, consolidation of server resources, simplification of software testing and development, and optimization of server and application availability. Users can easily streamline server and application deployment, maintenance and management, and consolidate and support legacy OSes and applications.
Parallels Server for Mac includes also includes a command line tool and support for scripting languages and supports Intel Virtualization Technology, as well as 32 and 64-bit platform and guest OS support.
Parallels Virtuozzo Containers, which complements Parallels Server, is designed for homogeneous environments partitioned to handle multiple containers per physical server.
