Apple Fix for Macbook Air Overheating
March 11, 2008
Apple unveiled a solution for the MacBook Air overheating problems which were alleged to be associated with some internal errors causing the intermittent freezing under CPU intensive operations.
The MacBook Air’s internal temperature would rise to abnormal levels, causing the system to stutter and lock up repeatedly.
The low performance of the notebook’s fan apparently caused the MacBook Air to overheat and then lockup, leaving the machine unresponsive for about 10 to 15 seconds.
MacBook Air users can launch Software Update this morning and find SMC Update 1.0, which adjusts the use of the internal fan. The SMC Update fine tunes the speed and operation of the internal fan.
This update is recommended for all MacBook Air systems. The updater application will be installed in the /Applications/Utilities folder.
Also, the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Firmware Update is available for the Mac Pro. This update is for Mac Pro computers with one or more ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards installed, running Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later with the Leopard Graphics Update.
According to Apple, “It updates the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics card firmware on all of the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT graphics cards in the Mac Pro to improve system stability.”
